60 years ago today, in 1964, Beatlemania swept through Pōneke as the Fab Four landed in Aotearoa on their 'Far East' tour. Shortly after arriving at the St George Hotel, thousands of fans gathered, blocking the intersection of Willis and Boulcott Streets. The crowd swelled to 4,000 strong. The very next day, The Beatles rocked Wellington Town Hall in their first New Zealand concert, with fans screaming and even puncturing the seats with their stiletto heels. Te Waka Huia Wellington Museum just got a little more lit. We’ve installed a set of pedestrian crossing lights featuring some famous figures — Carmen Rupe, Kate Sheppard, Alfred Shout, and the Te Matatini Kapa Haka dancer. Donated by Wellington City Council, these silhouetted crossing lights have lit up our streets, celebrating the incredible diversity and stories of Pōneke. Now, they’ve got a new home right here at Wellington Museum🚦 | Wellington Museum

On this day in 1981, 7000 protesters gathered in central Wellington and around Athletic Park to stop pro Springbok rugby tour supporters from gaining access to the second test match. Once again, the police intervened, this time using long batons, with many protesters injured as a result. Liz Roberts lived on Te Wharepōuri Street in Berhampore, close to Athletic Park, and recalls the events of the 2nd Test on August 29th, 1981, where she saw protesters clash with Police on her street. | Wellingto
