#100daysofpractice Season 7, days 80-89 80: so much playing today. 5-6 hours? Unprecedented for me these days; but that’s rehearsing of different sorts plus practice, both in my dressing room and onstage. Had a restorative muscle therapy afterwards so I’ll recover quicker before tomorrow’s rehearsal/concert day. 81: long video 82: short video 83: It’s amazing how getting comfortable with the Ginastera technical language has made traditional virtuosic language feel entirely foreign. #100daysofpractice Season 7, day 1 I’ve been craving detailed work on everything. I’ve spent a number of years working on the arc of the music, on play throughs, on clearing out toxic self talk and on understanding my physicality. I feel so good playing these days as a result! It’s clear to me what I want to do in the music and who I am as an artist. I feel like it’s increasingly important to maintain my close connection to the instrument. Now that I’m 44, I also feel like my relationship to the

#100daysofpractice Season 7, day 51 Left hand practice in the dark. Guess the piece/phrase/moment! I really like how the violin feels when my shoulders can sit square. I think it reminds me to separate the two sides of my body, in the sense that what the right hand needs is different from what the left hand needs. They don’t have to both be doing all the things, actively and sympathetically. Each hand only needs to do its half of the work. There’s a metaphor in there somewhere.

#100daysofpractice Season 7, days 70-79 I’ve gotten behind on my day count, but I’m sticking with these numbers! Day 72: did an afternoon session and felt very gummy in my hands after two nights of insufficient sleep (too much to do, de-prioritized sleep). Was going to do another session at 9 PM, but I was extremely tired, so I decided to lie down to take a nap. I knew I might sleep through the night, and I decided also that sleep was healthy in lieu of practicing. That’s exactly what happened!

#100daysofpractice Season 7, day 54 Still recovering the kinked muscles (unrelated to violin), but my methods are working! In the last 24 hours, I made the following adjustments/additions to get in the best working order: Therapeutic massage, rest, water, arnica soak, light 360 movements, a couple specialized stretches, walks, fresh air, eating as many fresh foods as possible, and staying conscious of what might have stressed the muscles in the first place. Let’s normalize playing an instrument

#100daysofpractice Season 7, day 22. Doing *something*. This season is, as I expected, a mirror for my own fluidity of routine. I knew it would be a bit uncomfortable to hold myself to these particular 100 days. I want to come to a better ease of working, so I’m letting myself feel confronted and noticing what comes up. #violin #practice #warmup #100days

#100daysofpractice Season 6, day 34. How much Chaconne is too much Chaconne? (inside joke) 2 am with these longer movements of Bach is a special combination. I know what it feels like to play solo Bach recitals, how far the musical ideas can spin onstage, and how important it is to be free to follow them. Experimenting during an open minded practice play through in the middle of the night is a meditation and a narration. Even though I know these pieces so well, I can still get turned around in t

#100daysofpractice Season 7, day 6 Actual footage of a parent who didn’t play violin all day, took an accidental 2 hour nap at 8:30 pm, and is trying to wake up and get the muscles moving - because music requires physical activity and performance requires being in top coordination - but is too dazed to figure out what to work on at 11:30 pm with neighbors. In 10 minutes, it’ll come to me. And then I’ll go to sleep. 🙋🏻‍♀️ if you relate. For those of you intrigued by my coat, it is simply the co

#100daysofpracticeSeason 6, day 35. When your seven-year-old picks up a baton while you’re drilling Bach patterns and says, “Let me conduct you!”, of course you say yes, and you follow their dynamics. It’s a good exercise in flexibility! And very cute.

#100daysofpractice Season 7, day 14 Don’t copy what I’m doing! I’m just stretching today. My arms, back, legs, hands & feet are all a bit stiff and sore from a lot of happy and vigorous playing the past few days. I’m finding the points of resistance and encouraging them to open up, nothing methodical. #100days #violin #practice #stretch #musician
