Happy Birthday, Ponca City! On September 16, 1893, Ponca City was founded during the historic Cherokee Strip Land Run. Led by B.S. Barnes and the Ponca Townsite Company, settlers lined up for a lottery to claim their new home on the prairie. Named after the Ponca Tribe, the city, then called ‘New Ponca,’ quickly grew and was incorporated in December. Over the last century, our city has built a legacy of resilience, growth, and pride. E.W. Marland’s Most Unique Gift to Ponca City wasn’t oil or even the mansion. It was the Pioneer Woman statue. Marland launched a national competition, sending twelve models across the country by train for the public to vote on their favorite. In the end, Bryant Baker’s design won by a landslide, earning him up to $200,000 to create the 17-foot bronze we see today.
