I just wrapped up a research trip through Rome and Venice — and now I’m in Florence, working on my Rick Steves Florence & Tuscany guidebook. And just like in Rome and Venice, the tourists here are crammed into the two or three most famous sights, leaving other museums and galleries — which would be big hits in a lesser city — essentially empty. Today, I visited the Hospital of the Innocents, where a museum tells the story of the abandoned children who, beginning in 1445, were cared for here. Thi

Every day is Memorial Day at the American Cemetery outside of Florence. Dropping by here, even on a cold and rainy December day, is a much-appreciated moment on many Rick Steves tours as we share with our travelers how Europe remembers and honors America’s great gift to Europe: freedom after WWII. Between all the laughter and fun, we work hard to give each tour a dose of reality...often harsh reality. Our guides help orchestrate a poignant moment: a moment to thank those who gave their lives so

After a very productive evening of restaurant research in Florence, I made it to my favorite place to eat in town in time for the last seating (22:15). Antica Trattoria da Tito is a 10-minute walk from the tourist center, and for the typical tourists, that’s beyond the dark side of the moon. But it’s a great example of the difference between eating at a place that needs to seduce a tourist to sit down for a meal and one that wins the loyalty of the neighborhood. Here’s a couple of minutes of vid

We pack a lot into each episode of Rick Steves’ Europe, but not everything makes the cut. And recently, I found a little treasure trove of footage that ended up on the cutting room floor. It’s all a bit rough — but these bits are too good to just throw out, so I salvaged them and have been sharing them one clip a day. Join me now for four minutes in Florence. We’ll see some of the city’s best statuary at the wonderful Bargello Museum, pop into the Central Market for some edible culture, and then

A hole-in-the-wall joint, a family affair, the place for pappardelle with duck and…a free Vin Santo and cantucci for dessert with my “Rick Steves’ Italy” guidebook! After filming this fun clip, I was happily walking away when a great idea hit me. I returned to the eatery and proposed to Tommaso that they offer my guidebook readers a free glass of dessert wine and cookies with any dinner, and he loved it. When you need a fun, affordable, and unforgettable dining experience a block away from the P

We encourage our guides to work with us in finding fun experiences for our groups. We’ll see the great art, of course, but we can make art as well (as you’ll see tour guide Angelos from Athens demonstrate). Anna Piperato (Siena & Italy Tours with Anna), one of our lead guides from Siena, introduced us to her friend Caterina Balletti, who has a “flash art” studio in Florence (Caterina Balletti Flash Art). The visit costs about $100 for the entire group, it comes with Prosecco, and a couple of tou
