I listened to Australian Army Cadets Austin Appelbee’s triple zero call and what struck me most was not panic. It was control. A 13 year old boy, exhausted, hypothermic, sitting on the beach after swimming for his life, calmly saying: “We got lost out there… I think they’re kilometres out to sea. I think we need a helicopter to go find them.” He clearly articulated: • Where they were • How long they had been in the water • What resources were needed • His own medical condition That is not luck.
