The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad is a 16 mile line tourist line operating out of the historic town of Cumberland, Maryland. The railroad owns several pieces of vintage rail equipment, including two steam locomotives. Number 734 is a 2-8-0 “Consolidation” type originally built to haul iron ore trains for the Lake Superior and Ishpemming on the Great Lakes. Before locomotive 1309 became the main steam power for the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, number 734 held down the runs from Cumberland to Frostburg. This 2-8-0 type steam locomotive was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1916 and worked hauling iron ore trains for the Lake Superior and Ishpeming Railroad as their number 34. During her 23 years of service, the 734 was an icon of the Cumberland and Frostburg communities. We welcomed families, railfans, and visitors from all over the world to see our workhorse in action. Hundreds of thousands of visitors got to see and ride behind the 734. There’s no doubt of the legacy she left behind, but we’re ready to take the next steps giving her another lease on life! We are preparing to conduct a full evaluation on the status of the 734, which will need a full FRA-1472 overhau
