A look at some of the conditions and collisions on I-90 Snoqualmie Pass last week. Between Jan. 24-27, we measured 52 inches of new snowfall, including 20 on Jan. 24 alone. While our snowplows work hard to keep the roadway open, that much snow means the roads won't be clear. But many of these collisions could be avoided by slowing down and adhering to restriction requirements like chains. We certainly aren't done with snow in the mountains this season so please be safe and cautious up there! | W

May was busy, busy, busy on our I-90 wildlife crossings as we recorded more than 900 animals using the structures. That's up 136 from May 2020 and in particular we saw a lot of deer fawns and elk calves. Our overcrossing east of Snoqualmie Pass had 219 crossings, including 155 elk while our Unnamed Creek crossing at milepost 61 had 215 crossings including 128 elk. The crossing at Gold Creek was next with 178 crossings, 106 by deer. We love seeing our animal friends safely getting across our road

Quite a bit of activity in early July on our I-90 wildlife crossings, including this elk herd (and one deer) on the overcrossing and a deer-coyote encounter near Hyak. Clearly the deer and coyote have a long-standing beef given the time between eye contact and go time, and props on the victory prance at the end. Thursday night our crews closed I-90 east of the Snoqualmie Pass summit to remove overhanging snow from the under-construction wildlife overcrossing near Price Creek (milepost 62). The tunnel-like structure is being built in stages and will eventually have walls on the sides to prevent snow, debris and, let's face it, animals, from falling onto the highway. I-90 Snoqualmie and US 97 Blewett passes will open later today, but we do not yet have an ETA.
