5 endangered red wolves arrive in New Jersey to boost survival efforts

This could be the last red wolf you see. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service seeks to reduce the recovery area for the world’s only wild red wolves by 90% and limit the population to just 10-15. Moreover, the killing of any red wolf who leaves the newly-designated “recovery” area will be ‘explicitly permissible’. Does this sound like recovery? TAKE ACTION The public comment period is open through July 30: https://bit.ly/2lPZAxw | Wolf Conservation Center

Did you know that red wolves are critically endangered? Althought they once roamed across the eastern United States, red wolves are now found in two main areas in North Carolina - the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge and the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge. With just 10 known to remain in the wild, red wolves like Lava are the future of their imperiled species. | Wolf Conservation Center

Time for lunch (and a little fighting...)! Research indicates that diet impacts the gut microbiome of Red Wolves - captive wolves that eat kibble have gut biomes that differ greatly from wild Red Wolves. Results suggest whole carcass diets, like those of the WCC wolves, better match wild wolf biomes. In 2020, fewer than 10 American Red Wolves remained in the wild. Today, thanks to conservation efforts, the wild population is rising again, and this spring, Violet even welcomed pups of her own. Red wolves once roamed across the southeastern U.S.— but today, they’re among the rarest wild animals in North America. With fewer than 20 left in the wild, each one represents a powerful story of resilience and the urgent need for recovery efforts. The Center's Integrative Ecology and Coexistence Lab is working to identify additional release sites for Red Wolves based on social tolerance, habitat suitability, and other factors. #SaveRedWolves #WolfConservation | Wolf Conservation Center

Once roaming across the entire Southeast, only 18 Red Wolves remain in the wild today. But there is hope. Through recovery programs, captive breeding, and public support, Red Wolves are slowly returning to the wild. Every pup born is a step toward a brighter future. This Red Wolf Week, you can help: ✔️ Advocate for protections under the Endangered Species Act ✔️ Support recovery through adoption, donations, or Red Wolf Week merch ✔️ Share their story to inspire others Together, we can ensure Red

Do opposites really attract? 🐺❤️ With Red Wolves, it just might be true. Our research partner Lovin, a graduate student at Utah State University advised by Dr. Julie Young, is helping uncover the answer. An ongoing investigation into behavior and mate compatibility within the Red Wolf SAFE population aims to uncover behavioral cues that predict reproductive success. Preliminary findings suggest that wolves with contrasting personalities may be more likely to produce offspring than those with si

Did you know that wild Red Wolves can trace back to the WCC? Seen in this video are captive Red Wolf pups Thicket (M1804) and Moose (M1803) who were the first litter of Red Wolf pups born at the WCC in the Spring of 2010. In 2013, Thicket flew from the WCC to St. Vincent National Wildlife Refuge to be introduced to a potential mate, female (F1729). After a few months, the pair was released in March 2014. Sadly, F1729 passed away the following winter, leaving Thicket alone until a new Red Wolf fe

One of the biggest challenges to red wolf recovery is misinformation, especially the belief that people don’t want red wolves back. But new research tells a different story. A new study by Drs. Ben Ghasemi and Jeremey Bruskotter in collaboration with WCC's senior research scientist, Dr. Joseph Hinton, found that people living in areas where red wolves once roamed actually support their return and believe they bring both ecological and societal benefits. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s updat

As one of the world’s most endangered mammals, the Red Wolf's story is one of survival, struggle, and hope. Here’s what you should know: 🟥 Fewer than 20 red wolves remain in the wild, most living in eastern North Carolina. 🟥 Once common across the Southeast, they were declared extinct in the wild by 1980. 🟥 A groundbreaking reintroduction program began in 1987 — the first of its kind in the U.S. 🟥 Released wolves wear bright orange collars to help prevent mistaken identity with coyotes. 🟥 R
