Boston and Maine Freight Equipment after 1920 - Far Acres Farm
In terms of going off-line, B&M's gons were somewhere between boxcars and hoppers. Through 1960, the B&M owned about 5,000 freight cars, but a 1966 Official Railway Equipment Register only lists 3,500. Much of the reduction was the retirement of most of the B&M's hoppers and gondolas as "tide coal" shipments ended.

The most obvious distinguishing features were the sides (single sheath vs. all steel), the door, and the reporting marks.

Feb 25, 2023 · The Boston and Maine Railroad placed an order for 500 new box cars in November [1946], estimated to cost approximately $1,870,000. The new cars will be 40 feet long, with a weight capacity of 50 tons, while their interior space, 3,898 cubic feet, will make them the largest capacity 40-foot box cars ever owned by the railroad.
