“Beyond their market value, the items have inestimable heritage and historical value,” it added.

Officials have acknowledged that lapses in security helped enable the daring theft, which took place with visitors inside 30 minutes after the museum opened.

Thieves reportedly stole nine pieces from the jewelry collection of Napoleon and the Empress in the Louvre, using a basket lift to reach the museum on Sunday morning.
