Firefighters are trying to contain the Dragon Bravo Fire on the Grand Canyon’s North Rim and keep it from destroying more buildings.

Fire crews sometimes allow lightning-strike fires to burn, and made the decision to do that on the Dragon Bravo Fire, intended to reduce hazardous fuels and vegetation along the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.

The National Park Service is defending its decisions regarding letting the Dragon Bravo Fire burn before it got out of control.

The Grand Canyon's North Bravo Fire intensified on July 11, the day before Katy Rock Shop owner Jacob Proctor and his family arrived at the national park.

The Dragon Bravo Fire started burning on July 4, but grew out of control a week later because of strong winds and destroyed the Grand Canyon Lodge.

Grand Canyon National Park evacuated Phantom Ranch and areas of the inner canyon after the rapidly growing Dragon Bravo Fire led to the leak of poisonous gas.

A Grand Canyon water treatment facility located at the North Rim caught fire on Saturday, causing chlorine gas to be released into the air. Multiple closures are being enforced due to the incident.
