The Louvre closed to the public for three days after the heist on Sunday. Some well-connected Americans got a private tour.
One of the most infamous heists in the cultural institution’s history was the 1911 theft of the Mona Lisa—when Pablo Picasso numbered among the suspects.
He was arrested a year later, while robbing an apartment, and sentenced to eight years in prison, along with being fined €104m (£90.3m). But the paintings have never been recovered. In 2023, Vjeran appeared in a Netflix documentary in which he went through the heist in detail.
