Paris’s Louvre Museum has always been a cultural touchstone, but a seven-minute raid on the centuries-old art institution over the weekend has inspired frenzied conversation the world over. At about 9:30 a.

The Louvre Museum in Paris remains closed to the public after robbers stole imperial jewels in broad daylight on Sunday.

The historic emerald necklace, gifted by Napoleon to his second wife, Empress Marie-Louise, was among eight pieces stolen in a daring daylight heist at the Louvre.

Empress Eugénie's 2,000-diamond tiara and the necklace from the sapphire set of Queen Marie-Amélie and Queen Hortense, made up of eight sapphires and 631 diamonds, were among the items stolen by a gang of four thieves who entered through a window.

"We take the safety and security of our exhibitors, visitors, and staff-as well as the security of the artworks and the historic infrastructure we are operating in-extremely seriously," an Art Basel representative said.

In a 'brazen' robbery at the Louvre museum in Paris, thieves broke into the Apollo Gallery and stole a number of items of jewellery. Thieves broke into the museum at about 09:30 local time (08:30 BST) - shortly before the attraction opened to visitors. The thieves were said to have been carrying small chainsaws and escaped on a scooter.
