Closing East Elementary School had been cast by the district as a way to save an estimated $3 million in operating costs, Newsday reported. District officials feared a loss in state aid last year.

East Elementary closed its doors as East in 2015, but Medill's students were transferred to East while Medill was torn down and the new Medill Elementary School was built on the same site.
