The price of eggs at U.S. grocery stores has climbed to a record high, nearly doubling from a year ago, as outbreaks of bird flu have led to shortages by wiping out millions of hens.

As the ongoing bird influenza continues to devastate the nation’s egg production, Turkey plans to export eggs into the U.S. through July in a preliminary agreement reached between the two nations.

Eggs are being confiscated at the U.S. border with Mexico amid a bird flu outbreak that has depleted chicken populations.

The bird flu outbreak is causing the price of eggs to soar, with prices at a 45-year high. The founder of the second largest egg producer in the U.S., John Rust, of Rose Acre Farms joins The Weekend to discuss.

Avian flu, commonly known as bird flu, is impacting chickens across the nation and forcing farmers to kill flocks which is in turn triggering increased egg prices.
