California Governor Gavin Newsom is proposing a bill to streamline permitting for new oil wells that environmental groups say would wipe out scrutiny of the industry.
Gov. Gavin Newsom says California should redraw its own congressional districts if Texas tries to gerrymander its lines. His idea faces long odds.
"Maybe we'll do it here in California," he said of Trump's mandate that Texas Republicans redistrict to win five more GOP seats.
"California provides $83.1 billion more than we receive from the federal government," Newsom said in a July 14 X post highlighting the interview. "Texas? Receives $71.1 billion more than they provide to the federal government. 71% of the U.S. GDP comes from blue counties."’
Newsom laughed and responded, “You’re hitting me right there man, the California exodus. By the way, complete bulls—t. Now, the last two years, we’ve seen significant growth in California’s population. So it’s reversed, and record-breaking tourism.”

The update comes after President Donald Trump earlier this week urged Republican state lawmakers in Texas to help the party pick up five seats in that state.

Newsom has defended the proposal as a break-the-emergency-glass maneuver to preserve what he has cast as America’s besieged democracy, arguing Democrats have to become more aggressive and creative to have a shot at blocking Trump’s agenda.
U.S. Border Patrol Chief Gregory Bovino said on X that one of those who was arrested had a list of convictions, including possession of narcotics with the intent to distribute. Another operation on Thursday took place in Los Angeles, he wrote.
