Thousands gathered in Union Park Thursday morning before marching to Grant Park for a rally marking May Day, also known as International Workers’ Day, the global holiday commemorating the labor rights movement with roots in Chicago history.

University of Chicago student Karen Chuchuca thought of her father, an Ecuadorian immigrant who has worked as a truck driver for 25 years, when President Donald Trump signed an executive order earlier this week reinforcing a federal law requiring commercial motor drivers speak English.

Thousands marched through Chicago today for May Day, demanding workers' rights, immigrant protections and better workplace conditions. The rally began in Union Park and concluded in Grant Park, with speeches from labor leaders, immigrants, and elected officials.
