Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee said she has been in "close contact" with police after a student was shot Wednesday afternoon at Skyline High School and two young people were arrested.

Kerr, whose father was shot dead in a terrorist attack in Beirut in 1984, has long been outspoken about stronger gun laws.

With Oakland Police Chief Floyd Mitchell on his way out, Mayor Barbara Lee on Friday named his interim replacement.

We have a lot of good leaders in the Oakland Police Department,” Mitchell said. “Jim Beere stood above them all.”

It was the second shooting at Skyline in the past year and a half. In May 2024, three adults were wounded when gunfire erupted at the school’s graduation ceremony. In December 2022, a 14-year-old student was stabbed multiple times at the school. He survived.

A shooting occurred at Laney College in Oakland Thursday, authorities confirmed. No other details were immediately available. Laney is a community college located near Lake Merritt. On Wednesday, a juvenile was injured and two others were arrested following a shooting at Oakland's Skyline High School.
