From Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa to Vincent van Gogh's The Potato Eaters, some of the most famous paintings in the world have been stolen from top museums in daring global heists
One of the most infamous heists in the cultural institution’s history was the 1911 theft of the Mona Lisa—when Pablo Picasso numbered among the suspects.
He was arrested a year later, while robbing an apartment, and sentenced to eight years in prison, along with being fined €104m (£90.3m). But the paintings have never been recovered. In 2023, Vjeran appeared in a Netflix documentary in which he went through the heist in detail.
A heist has taken place at the Louvre, Paris. The world’s largest art museum, the Louvre has approximately half a million objects in its collection, with about 30,000 on display, and sees on average 8 million visitors per year.
Thieves broke into Paris' Louvre museum through a window, stealing "priceless" items of jewelry before escaping on motorbikes.
