Monday is Groundhog Day, meaning it’s time we learn if our rodent friends think Spring is in sight or if there is more Winter on the way.
The Pennsylvania Dutch are believed to have changed the furry weather predictor from the badger in German-speaking areas to the groundhog.
It’s a tradition that’s been done for generations with many groundhogs, or one immortal groundhog, depending on who you talk to. It’s Groundhog Day, a day when a groundhog will predict if there will be six more weeks of winter or an early spring.
On February 2, 1887, Groundhog Day, featuring a rodent meteorologist, is celebrated for the first time at Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.
