As Europe prevaricates over US threats for annexation there is a unifying feeling of self-determination among Greenlanders

Top Trump aide Stephen Miller says it's the "formal position" of the White House that Denmark's territory of Greenland "should be part of the U.S."

Trump allies have cited the island's continued role in missile defense infrastructure, accusing Denmark of leaving it vulnerable to potential Russian and Chinese influence.

The leaders of France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain and the United Kingdom joined Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in defending Greenland's sovereignty in the wake of President Trump's comments.

Denmark and Greenland requested a meeting with Marco Rubio, which one Danish lawmaker hopes will halt talk "about wanting to acquire Greenland."

Greenland is sovereign in everything other than defence and foreign policy, but by being part of the Kingdom of Denmark, it is included within Nato. As with any nation, access to its land and coastal waters is tightly controlled through permits that specify where work may take place and what activities are allowed.

Denmark and Greenland’s envoys to Washington have begun a vigorous effort to urge U.S. lawmakers as well as key Trump administration officials to step back from President Trump’s call for a “takeover”
