Jackie, one half of the internet’s beloved bald eagle pair Jackie and Shadow, has died after several weeks of intensive medical care, the Ojai Raptor Center announced in an Aug. 10 Instagram post.
The bald eagle and her mate gained fame during the pandemic, as a livestream tracked their nesting attempts. She died while being treated for anemia.
While internet-famous bald eagle dad Shadow doesn't have to care for eaglets Sandy and Luna around the clock these days, he still swung by his habitat yesterday. According to Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV), he perched on one of his preferred trees over Big Bear Lake for about 45 minutes.
Despite tragedy, injuries and setbacks, this young eagle is beginning to use her wings. Rehabbers are seeing “excellent signs that Snow is on her way to being a well-functioning wild eagle,” Wildside Rehabilitation and Education Center said in an update on social media.
As experts work to give Jackie the care she needs, her family protects the nest and her mate Shadow continues to care for their children.
In 1976, Tina Morris embarked on an ambitious project at Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge, implementing a hacking technique to raise young bald eagles. The initiative aimed to restore eagle populations that had plummeted over the years.
