Returning to the mound for the fourth inning with hopes of calming things down against the bottom of the Mariners’ lineup, Flaherty was greeted by an authoritative swing from slugger Eugenio Suárez, who pummeled a poorly placed fastball deep to left field for a solo home run.

Logan Gilbert threw six strong innings, and Eugenio Suarez silenced the Detroit crowd with a third-inning blast.

The Mariners are going to entrust a closeout game in the hands of this third-year starting pitcher that hasn't been very good this year.

On Sunday, the Mariners won a home playoff game for the first time since 2001 by defeating the Tigers 3-2. Seattle won Game 2 of the American League Division Series, and plays Game 3 of the series in Detroit on Tuesday.

All the way over on the west coast, the Mariners picked up a much-needed 3-2 win against the Tigers, with Jorge Polanco and Julio Rodríguez each playing hero. Polanco hit two solo home runs off of Detroit ace Tarik Skubal, then Rodríguez delivered the go-ahead double in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Having Carlos Rodón take the mound Tuesday should help. The lefty turned in an excellent season in 2025. But no Yankees pitcher has fooled the Blue Jays in the series thus far. With a win in Game 3, Toronto would eliminate its division rivals from the playoffs and move on to the ALCS.
