The AI startup launched its first stand-alone consumer app, as the company tries to catch up with more established players such as OpenAI and Google in the generative AI race.

Elon Musk's artificial intelligence (AI) startup, xAI, has launched a new consumer app called Grok, providing users access to the company's chatbot. The Grok app, currently in beta, is available for free on iOS and features xAI's latest model, Grok 2.

Elon Musk's AI company, xAI, is testing out a standalone iOS app for its chatbot, Grok, which was available only to X users until now.

Elon Musk has announced that xAI's Grok 3 large language model (LLM) has been pretrained, and took 10X more compute power than Grok 2. He did not reveal many details, but based on timing, the Grok 3 LLM was pre-trained on the Colossus supercluster, which contains some 100,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs.

xAI has released an iOS app in the US for its Grok chatbot, as spotted earlier by TechCrunch. The standalone app version of the chatbot, which xAI calls a beta, can perform the same functions as the one built into X, as it can field real-time information, answer questions, and generate images.

To use the new image analysis features on mobile just load up the X app, then tap on the Grok tab at the bottom of the screen (a square with a line through it) then the + button to upload an image. In a browser, go to X.com and click on Grok in the left-hand menu, then use the paperclip button to attach an image to upload.
